Public university fees are expected to rise




The fees for admission to public universities (UA) is expected to increase from next year following the government's action to cut allocations to the UA as announced in Budget 2016.
The percentage increase in fees is expected in the range of 20% to cover deficits incurred by the UA that will involve 534.569 students.
PKR strategic director (PKR), Sim Tze Tzin said that the university may also increase the non-academic fees such as boarding fees, registration fees, service fees and so on.
"In a state loan of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) are cut, an increase in university fees will be very popular among the students," he said in a media statement.
Bayan Baru MP said, with severe cuts to the UA, UMNO / BN may lose the support of the students.
He said that in general election (GE13), UMNO / BN only get 46% support young people in the 21-25 age category.
He said PKR protest budget cuts because it is a national responsibility and also a wise investment.
"According to the OECD study, investment into higher education will bring high returns to government. On average, each Ringgit government to invest in higher education, the government will get RM6 in taxes. Investment in higher education will get to- high effect. It also reduces the problem of unemployment to the government, "he said.
In Budget 2016, a total of RM2.4 billion or 15% has been deducted from the Higher Education Ministry.
Overall, the UA suffered budget cuts of RM 1,442,226,800 or equivalent to -16.5% compared to the 2015 Budget.
A total of 19 of the 20 UA experiencing budget cuts and Universiti Malaya (UM) suffered the worst cuts of 27.3%.
